Canada Day 2009 : 100 Reasons to Not Celebrate
PEJ News - Joan Russow, Global Compliance Research Project - No amount of gun salutes, military fly-overs, Snow bird formations, fire works explosions, flag wavings can eclipse what has been really happening in Canada. No amount of nice sounding rhetoric such as in the minority government’s 2007 Speech from the Throne, comparing “Canada to the guiding light of the North Star”, can prevent Canada from now being perceived as an international pariah of corporatism and militarism. Canada has increasingly become and international rogue state, contributing to war and conflict, to violating human rights, to denying social justice, and to destroying the environment.

The Significance of Washington's Coup Attempt in Honduras
PEJ News - Shamus Cooke, U.S. Editor - There should be no doubts about the U.S.’ decisive role behind the now-crumbling military coup in Honduras. As commander and chief of the U.S. armed forces, the blame for this intervention lies solely on President Obama. The White House, however, would like you to believe that they “attempted to convince the Honduran military not to intervene.” Rubbish.

Democrats and Republicans Join Hands Over Immigration
PEJ News- Shamus Cooke, U.S. Editor- Even the most optimistic Obama supporter should cringe in response to the White House’s recent “bi-partisan immigration talks.” What could Democrats and Republicans possibly have in common over immigration? Quite a lot it turns out. An enormous sell-out is being prepared for the U.S. immigrant population and Latinos especially — who came out in record numbers in many swing states to vote for Obama last year. Attached to these votes are huge expectations.

Obama's First Coup D'etat

OBAMA’S FIRST COUP D’ETATPEJ News- Eva Gollinger- [Note: As of 11:15am, Caracas time, President Zelaya of Honduras is speaking live on Telesur from San Jose, Costa Rica. He has verified the soldiers entered his residence in the early morning hours, firing guns and threatening to kill him and his family if he resisted the coup. He was forced to go with the soldiers who took him to the air base and flew him to Costa Rica. He has requested the U.S. Government make a public statement condemning the coup, otherwise, it will indicate their compliance.] Caracas, Venezuela - The text message that beeped on my cell phone this morning read “Alert, Zelaya has been kidnapped, coup d’etat underway in Honduras, spread the word.” It’s a rude awakening for a Sunday morning, especially for the millions of Hondurans that were preparing to exercise their sacred right to vote today for the first time on a consultative referendum concerning the future convening of a constitutional assembly to reform the constitution. Supposedly at the center of the controversary is today’s scheduled referendum, which is not a binding vote but merely an opinion poll to determine whether or not a majority of Hondurans desire to eventually enter into a process to modify their constitution. www.chavezcode.com

Iran's Coming Revolution: For Civil Rights or Beyond?
PEJ News- Shamus Cooke, U.S. Editor- Simplifying the events in Iran as yet another attempt at a U.S. financed “color revolution” is shortsighted, to say the least. But this is the shallow position many on the left are taking. Fortunately, millions of people partaking in mass demonstrations cannot be reduced to “mere puppets” of Uncle Sam — they have aspirations of their own and ways to achieve them.
It is possible that the U.S. played a role in the events leading up to the massive protests in Iran, since the U.S.-sponsored color revolution formula is well known: a pro-western opposition candidate creates political instability — usually around election time — and uses the demonstrators who support them, who are funneled money through the C.I.A., to help topple the existing regime.

The Best President Money Could Buy
PEJ News- Richard Skaff- Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines capitalism as “an economic system characterized by private or corporate ownership of capital goods, by investments that are determined by private decision, and by prices, production, and the distribution of goods that are determined mainly by competition in a free market (1).” Despite the appearance of completeness, this definition is missing one thing; an unregulated capitalist society run by corrupt men would eventually collapse like a house of cards. Our brand of capitalism relies on prolific consumerism as a means to globalization, where needs are created and where everything and everyone is for sale. We tend to sell the public various goods, services, people, politicians, Presidents, and even God for the right price. Everything and everyone becomes a commodity to be purchased and sold. From this consumerism, we develop an addiction to consumption that renders us as needy infants desperate to suckle their mother’s breast.

The Lithium Rush Begins
PEJ News - JossJosephMageau - An interesting development is taking place in South America, specifically in one of the poorest nations in the combined "American" continents. It appears that more than 50 percent of the known reserves of lithium in the world are in Bolivia. Las Salars de Uyuni, a dazzling, surrealistic salt desert in the far south is where this potential bonanza can be harvested. It is as if Pachamama, or Holy Mother Earth, is offering a step towards solving our tiresome release of hydrocarbons into the air and, of course, combating global warming. www.PEJ.org

Against the Tortured Logic of Obama's Placebo Presidency, A Call for the Audacity of Hopelessness
PEJ News - Phil Rockstroh - From time to time, events unfold that are so large in scope, so all-encompassing in their implications that one’s initial response is muted by an inability to categorize it all within the realm of experience. Previous reference points prove of little service. One’s image of oneself and one’s place in the world is under siege, perhaps even in danger of being torn away. One stare’s into the abyss, until the abyss removes its dark shades and makes direct eye contact. The mind buzzes; one’s thoughts scuttle in circles like stunned insects. www.PEJ.org

Ignatieff must finally support a vote of non-confidence, and the Governor General must call upon the opposition parties to form government
PEJ News - Joan Russow, Ph.D., Global Compliance Research Project - UPDATE; On [Monday, June 15,] ON FRIDA,Y JUNE 19, Michael Ignatieff has the opportunity of supporting a non- confidence vote in Parliament. While this motion would pass and would bring down the Harper government, it will not automatically result in an election. The Governor General erred in appeasing Harper through the dissolving and through the proroguing of Parliament. Now, if there is a successful vote of non-confidence in the Conservative government, she has the chance to rectify her errors by finally standing up to Harper, and calling upon the Opposition parties to govern. The time has come for the majority votes in parliament to count. How often, in the Harper years, have the Opposition parties voted together, and expressed the wishes of over 60 % of the public. Now in recent polls, the three opposition parties, along with the Green Party, have the support of almost 70% of the citizens of Canada. Harper can no longer speak for Canada.

Who Will Pay for Healthcare in the U.S.?
PEJ News - Shamus Cooke, U.S. Editor - There’s a jumbled, increasingly hysterical tone to the health care debate going on in Washington. On each side of the uproar lie powerful and opposing interests: on one side the giant corporations who make billions of dollars via the status quo; and on the other, the majority of working people who suffer immensely from it. Creating a health care “compromise” between these two interests is of course impossible, but seeing the politicians in Congress attempt one is at least good entertainment.

Peru: Blood Flows in the Amazaon
PEJ News - James Petras - In early June, Peruvian President Alan García, an ally of US President Barack Obama, ordered armored personnel carriers, helicopter gun-ships and hundreds of heavily armed troops to assault and disperse a peaceful, legal protest organized by members of Peru’s Amazonian indigenous communities protesting the entry of foreign multinational mining companies on their traditional homelands. Dozens of Indians were killed or are missing, scores have been injured and arrested and a number of Peruvian police, held hostage by the indigenous protestors were killed in the assault. President García declared martial law in the region in order to enforce his unilateral and unconstitutional fiat granting of mining exploitation rights to foreign companies, which infringed on the integrity of traditional Amazonian indigenous communal lands.

Wall Street Ends Hope For Homeowners Via Congress
PEJ News - Shamus Cooke, U.S. Editor - As if the bank bailouts weren’t proof enough that Wall Street owned Congress. History will likely show that these bailouts involved the largest transfer of wealth ever — from the working class to that small group of billionaires who own the corporations. This fact is recognized by most people now and is such common knowledge that even the mainstream media feels comfortable discussing it…matter-of-factly.

U.S. Ruling Class to Voters: No Change in Terror Policy PEJ News - Brad Forrest - Guantanamo Bay detention center remains open at the behest of the U.S. Senate despite public disapproval and the half-hearted support for closure by President Barack Obama. Lenin called parliament, in our case the House and Senate, a talking shop given to distract us from the real process of government that goes on behind closed doors. His timely words should be remembered now in the United States’ continual War on Terrorism. The Senate is like a shock absorber that effectively neutralizes any grievances from the broad mass of the people that happen to make it through absorber number one, the House of Representatives. Recently the Senate voted 90-6 in favor of denying President Barack Obama the funds need to close the odious Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba.

Global Peace Index Misrepresents Canada as a Peaceful Nation
PEJ News - Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - The Global Peace Index , see http://www.visionofhumanity.org/gpi/results/rankings.php, ranks countries according to a series of indicators. While most of the indicators are important, there are many that are not clear and there are many indicators that should have been included. Under the current index Canada is high on the peace Index at number 8, and is marked as such on the Global map on the site.. If, however, other relevant indicators were added Canada would be much lower.
