Illegal Federal Election

PEJ News - Copy of letter sent,

Dear Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean and leaders of the Opposition:

We respectfully request that you refuse an election call at the bequest of Stephen Harper.  From what we understand he is trying to circumvent his own legislation.

Due to the illegality of the election call and the unnecessary expense to voters we recommend a coalition of Opposition leaders gather and assume control of the government until the four year election date.

In 1926, the Governor General intervened to prevent an election call.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.

Sincerely,

Jim Wight

No Election Will Absolve Harper’s Conservatives from Potentially Fraudulent Acquisition of Power

No Election Will Absolve Harper's Conservatives from Potentially Fraudulent Acquisition of Power

PEJ News - Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - During the week of August 11-14, the media reported on the investigation, by the Parliamentary Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics, into the Conservative financial schemes of the 2006 election. The media reported on the scheme of transferring expenses to the local riding, in violation of the Elections Act, and on the failure of most of the Conservative candidates, who were subpoenaed, to appear before the Committee. The media, a week later, however, reported that Harper believes that Parliament is dysfunctional, and that Harper is prepared to call an election. The media, however is not making a connection between the serious violation of the Elections Act by the Conservatives in the last election, and whether an election should even be possible when there are allegations of violations of the Elections Act, and also whether the Conservative Party, if found guilty of fraud, should even be permitted to function as the government of Canada. Or has Canada arrived at an untenable position that leaders, executives and candidates of political parties have immunity to fraud?

Democratic Convention: Barack Obama CAN Chart a New Course for Afghanistan.

PEJ News
- Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - Throughout the years, and throughout the globe, there has been no shortage of proposals for real change in the United States. If Barack Obama is serious about "charting a new course for the United States", perhaps he could consider the following proposed actions that would move the United States away from its years of militarism and chart a new course for Afghanistan.

Hiroshima and Nagasaki Remembered

PEJ News - Submission by Ace Hoffman - World War Two certainly did not end with a whimper, but with a bang.  Two very large bangs -- three if you count the Trinity test blast (and you should).  The war drums have continued banging ever since.

What could have been one of the more joyous dates in history -- the anniversary of the end of the last Great War, World War Two -- is, instead, a time of deep reflection about how it ended, and what it started.

Each year, old questions are asked anew. Were the bombings of both Hiroshima and Nagasaki militarily necessary?

Obama's Vice President: Guidelines for Choosing a Democratic Running Mate

PEJ News
- Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - Obama claimed that he was going "to chart a new course for America". Throughout the years, and throughout the globe, there has been no shortage of proposals for real change in the United States. If Barack Obama is serious about "charting a new course for the America", perhaps he could consider the following proposed actions that would assist him in choosing a Democratic running mate, and in moving the United States away from its years of militarism. corporatism, and fundamentalism.

Iran and Nuclear Weapons

PEJ News - Letter from Ace Hoffman -
Two people wrote to say they don't believe Iran is heading towards testing a nuclear weapon.  But Iran hardly needs nuclear-derived electricity!  They have oil, wind, solar, geothermal, wave -- they have lots of cheaper, safer, energy.  Some say they need nuclear power because they have oil, but no refineries.  But then, wouldn't building a refinery make more sense, at far less cost and risk?

Drug Companies – The New Sin Stocks

PEJ News - John Carey - It is part of the American dream to put a dollar into a company stock today, and get lots of dollars back when you sell.  The only modifier to this dream by some is an aversion towards “sin” stocks – avoiding companies that make alcohol, cigarettes, pornography, guns or provide gambling.

But when I suggest that you pitch drug-companies into this same sin-bucket you probably think I’m joking.  But I’ll let you in on my reasoning, which includes numerous lawsuits against the companies, lying by the company executives to market their drugs under false pretenses for profit’s sake, and drugs pushed on the public which knowingly harm more people with the side-effects than they ever help.

Chained dogs are ticking time bombs

Lindsay Pollard-Post - Since July, at least five Americans, ranging in age from 3 to 90 years old, have been severely injured—and one killed—by a hazard lurking in back yards in nearly every neighborhood in the country: chained dogs.

Hold the calamari

Paula Moore - Twenty-five octopuses in Europe are having an I Love the 80s moment. The octopuses have been given Rubik’s Cubes—those annoying puzzles that baffled and defeated countless people during the 1980s—as well as balls and other toys to play with. Researchers are hoping to determine whether octopuses, like humans, have a dominant arm—er, tentacle—or if they are “octidextrous.”

Bush has no right to lecture about human rights

PEJ News
- posted by Joan Russow - Ramsey Clark - August 22, 2008 - A price the American people are paying for the failure of the House of Representatives to impeach Bush, Cheney and their cabal for crimes against peace, war crimes and crimes against humanity -- the greatest assaults on peace and human rights of this century -- is the Bush Administration’s bellicose drum beat for war against a widening circle of chosen enemies.

Constitutional Crisis in Canada over Conservative Potentially Fraudulent Acquisition of Power

PEJ News - Joan Russow -
Global Compliance Research Project - [Originally submitted, as a letter, to the Globe and Mail] - On August 12, Tim Naumetz, from the Globe and Mail, reported that a Tory MP had said he was told he could ignore ethics. What is being revealed during the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Access to Information Privacy and Ethics, is that during the 2006 election the Conservatives in at least 67 ridings with their "in-and-out" financial scheme, quite possibly by spending beyond the spending limits, became the government of Canada.

Coal to Liquids

PEJ News -
This is an excerpt from an interesting internet forum.  Check the link Coal-to-Liquids  to read the article.

"It is not just environmental groups who are objecting to proliferation of coal-to-liquids technology. I am an energy engineer with 38+ years of experience. Coal-to-liquids is a red herring; a straw dog; a total waste of time, energy, money and talent; a boondoogle. A solution that solves the wrong problem."

Stop Cridge Park Development

PEJ News - The Cridge Park area is under consideration by the city to be redeveloped into high density commercial, trucking and bus terminal. This area is at the south end of Blanshard St.  I am sure that environmentalists are cringing over the use of a park for a transit stop and high intensity development.  If you want to help get in touch with the Cridge Park Rescue Group

NATO is a Provocative Dangerous Institution and Must be Disbanded

PEJ News
- Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - While the NATO states deliberate at NATO headquarters over the conflict between Georgia and Russia, they must acknowledge the role of Georgia in initiating the conflict, and of NATO in provoking serious continuous conflict through both its existence and its expansion. The NATO states collectively spend approximately 70% of the current 1.473 trillion. global military budget.
