The first law that should be repealed in the United States is the 2005 Bankruptcy Bill: Will Obama eliminate debt slavery?

PEJ News - chycho - Our centralized government representatives would like us to believe that the subprime mortgage crisis was not expected, however, the truth is that it was expected and authorities knew that a multi-billion dollar crime was being committed.

The Scam

In 1999 the New York Times reported that the easing of credit requirements on loans would mean that Fannie Mae would be “taking on significantly more risk, which may not pose any difficulties during flush economic times. But the government-subsidized corporation may run into trouble in an economic downturn, prompting a government rescue similar to that of the savings and loan industry in the 1980's… ‘If they fail, the government will have to step up and bail them out the way it stepped up and bailed out the thrift industry.’” This was reported in 1999.

In 2004, “Long before the mortgage crisis began rocking Main Street and Wall Street, a top FBI official made a chilling, if little-noticed, prediction: The booming mortgage business, fueled by low interest rates and soaring home values, was starting to attract shady operators and billions in losses were possible. ‘It has the potential to be an epidemic,’ Chris Swecker, the FBI official in charge of criminal investigations, told reporters in September 2004. But, he added reassuringly, the FBI was on the case. ‘We think we can prevent a problem that could have as much impact as the S&L crisis,’ he said.”

Canadian financial swindle is just as absurd as that of the United States: Canadian and US Bank Bailouts are Equivalent

PEJ News - chycho - Let’s do some simple mathematics to put things into perspective.

The United States has a population of 303,824,640 and the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, commonly referred to as the $700 billion bailout of the US financial system, means that approximately $2,304 per capita will be donated to banking institutions, or should I say, be given to private banks so that they can maintain their stranglehold on citizens of the United States.

Canada has a population of 33,212,696 and on 12 November 2008, the federal government announced that they would be “purchasing another $50 billion in residential mortgages to further stabilize the lending industry and encourage lower interest rates... The announcement follows a similar move last month in which Ottawa bought $25 billion in mortgages. The combined mortgage debt, both purchased through the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC), will bring the maximum value of bought securities to $75 billion”, which means that in Canada approximately $2,258 per capita will be donated to banking institutions.

Community Forum on the Tent-City Decision

We would like to invite you to a community forum on the tent-city decision (Adams v. Victoria (City)) hosted by UAWL, IHRLA and the ELC.

The "tent-city" case was decided a few weeks ago, and found that Victoria by-laws prohibiting camping in public were unconstitutional, as they infringed upon homeless individuals' section 7 rights. The forum is meant to explore the impact this decision has had on the effects of homelessness, and the potential effects that the decision can carry. It will explore this through a number of different perspectives, reflected in the diverse panelists:

The event will be held on Monday, November 17 at 7:00 - 9:00pm in room 159 of the Fraser Building at UVic. There will be a panel discussion and a period for questions. The event is free and open to the public, with members of the community welcome to attend. Presenters include:

The Economic crisis: Message to the G-20 - re-align spending priorities and advance cooperative social economy- PEJ.news- Joan Russow (PhD)
Global Compliance Research Project

The G-20 leaders meet in Washington on November 15 to ruminate over the economic crisis While the world is facing food insecurity, environmental disasters, health problems/pandemics, and devastating wars, the demise of the competitive economic capitalist model fostering growth at any cost has to be brought into question. The economic competitiveness model has led to militarism, to destruction and to inequitable distribution of resources. Its current demise should be deemed as an opportunity to question its legitimacy and seriously consider furthering the cooperative social economy.

The meeting of the G-20 reflects a fundamental systemic constraint change preventing change: the presumption that those responsible for the problem are those most capable of solving the problem.
For the G-20 meeting, President Sarkosy’s is attempting to rescue capitalism through the epithet “Moralise capitalism” – the epitome of the oxymoron.

Dysfunctional Canadian Parliament: Harper must step down and a Coalition government formed

PEJ  News - Joan Russow
- Global Compliance Research Project - Harper’s rationale for calling the election was that Parliament was dysfunctional. He deemed that Parliament was dysfunctional because the three opposition parties representing over 66% of the electorate disagreed with his policies. He had presumed that he would be successful in obtaining a majority and thus his policies would then be implemented. While he increased the number of Conservative members he failed to attain a majority government, and thus the Parliament is still dysfunctional. If the dysfunctionality of a minority government was the reason for going to the polls then when he obtained another minority government – equally dysfunctional- he should have stepped down and called upon the Governor General to form a Coalition Government. But he didn’t, why.

Was there another reason for calling a quick election? Was it because, with an election, there would be the dissolution of the Parliamentary Ethics Committee that was investigating the Conservative violation of the Elections Act in the 2006 election? Serious questions arise about the condoning of potentially fraudulent election practices, the reneging of responsibility by the Governor General; the disregarding, by the media, of this issue during the election; and the legitimacy of Harper speaking on behalf of Canada. with less than 40% support of the population..

Ay, Chihuahua! Stardom Spells Suffering for ‘It’ Breeds

PETA - Lindsay Pollard-Post -
For weeks, the animal shelter where I volunteer has been gearing up for the release of the new Disney movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua. Not by reading reviews or buying tickets—but by assessing cage space, especially the cages that hold little dogs. They know that in just a few months, they will likely be filled with dozens of cast-off “Papis” and “Chloes.”

Remembering that War is a Racket on Remembrance Day

PEJ News - chycho -
Remembrance Day (Australia, Canada, United Kingdom), also known as Poppy Day (Malta and South Africa) and Armistice Day (France, New Zealand, and many other Commonwealth countries; and the original name of the day internationally) "is a day to commemorate the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War. It is observed on 11 November to recall the end of World War I on that date in 1918." How unfortunate that we have a need for such a day, especially since "War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives." So stated Major General Smedley D. Butler, USMC, the most decorated Marine in US history. Today, and every day, we should remember why we have sent our children to die, and to kill. We should remember that war is meant to consolidate assets for the oligarchy. We should also remember that the majority of casualties of every War have been civilians. That not only soldiers, but countless innocents have been caught in the line of fire between warring corporations to increase the wealth of the privileged few.

PEJ News -
General Motors has been taking aeons and still haven't got it right.  Now they are asking the Government to bail them out.   Obama will soon be facing how to fix the economy.   Here he has an opportunity to enforce green economic values onto an industry who has been opposed to the green agenda.

Racism, Immigration and Profit

Worker's Action - Shamus Cooke -
People are rightly confused about the issue of immigration -- it is a complex phenomenon and many things need to be considered. Often times, there seem to be equally compelling arguments and statistics on either side of the issue, creating even more confusion.

Unfortunately, the immigration debate is often tinged or even marred by racism - usually subtly, sometimes openly. This feeling finds a receptive audience not because of prejudice, but out of fear. Indeed, racism cannot exist without fear. We believe that, at bottom, recent immigration-related topics -- from ballot measures to border fences -- directly or indirectly contain elements of racism and fear. Unraveling the basis for this fear, as well as those in charge of creating it, is essential if one is to make an informed decision on the immigration question. While doing this, we will attempt to uncover the deeper reasons that have created the atmosphere that has projected this issue on to center stage.

Melamine Isn’t the Only Scary Ingredient in Candy

PETA - Tracy Reiman -
Last month, several candy companies—including Cadbury, Mars and Nestlé—found themselves caught up in China’s tainted-milk scandal. Candies made by the companies’ subsidiaries in Asia were found to contain melamine and were recalled, although the companies claim that the levels were too low to pose a health risk. Milk and baby formula contaminated with melamine are believed to have killed four children in China and sickened tens of thousands more.

Heinbecker interview on the current: misrepresentation and historical revisionism

PEJ News - Joan Russow - The role that Canada undertook was to attempt to get a unanimous UNSC resolution which would have sanctioned military intervention but within two weeks. If the UNSC had agreed to the Canadian Proposal, the result would have been that the invasion by international law (not moral law) deemed legal, and Canada would have been involved. From what I gather Canada lobbied very strongly to have its draft of the UNSC resolution accepted. Fortunately, Canada's document was rejected by other states.

But not thanks to Heinbecker!!!

A message to all Australians, are you out of your minds? Australia’s Internet censorship will be ‘worse than Iran’

PEJ News - chycho - A few days ago I came across the news that the Australian government was implementing plans for a no opt-out censored Internet. This will be a multi-million dollar project and will be “mandatory for all Australians”, which means that “Australians will be unable to opt-out of the government's pending Internet content filtering scheme, and will instead be placed on a watered-down blacklist.”

If Australians allow this scheme to be implemented, then it means that they will be living under Totalitarianism, a political system where a “state regulates nearly every aspect of public and private life.” This is the same type of regime that the Soviet Union functioned as, maintaining itself “in political power by means of an official all-embracing ideology and propaganda disseminated through the state-controlled mass media, a single party that controls the state, personality cults, control over the economy, regulation and restriction of free discussion and criticism, the use of mass surveillance, and widespread use of terror tactics.”

President-elect Obama CAN abandon the way things were

PEJ News - Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - Throughout his campaign, Barack Obama declared that he would “chart a new course for America”, and in his victory speech he said: “This victory alone is not the change we seek. It is only the chance for us to make this change. And this cannot happen if we go back to the way things were.” And to all those watching tonight from beyond our shores…. Our destiny is shared. He now has the opportunity to move the United States of America away from its years of militarism, competitiveness and fundamentalism. Enclosed is a series of proposals to prevent the United States of America from “going back to the way things were."
