Marine Mammal Parks: Let Freedom Ring
PETA - On July Fourth, Americans from sea to shining sea will celebrate our independence and right to self-determination. But for the countless fish, dolphins, whales, sea lions and other animals kept in chlorinated tanks in aquariums and marine mammal parks—where the “shining sea” is a fading memory—July Fourth is just another “dependence day.” We humans are captivated by beautiful fish and marine mammals, but the animals themselves pay for our curiosity with their freedom. Many have paid with their lives. www.PETA.org

Oprah Went Vegan: Will Fans Follow?
PETA - Heather Moore - Nearly everything Oprah Winfrey does is newsworthy—and what she eats is no exception. When she announced on her show that she was going to forgo all animal products—as well as wheat, alcohol, caffeine and sugar—for three weeks in order to become a more “conscious eater,” I heaved a huge sigh of relief. I’ve been trying to convince people to go vegan for more than 16 years, but my voice is merely a whisper compared to that of the queen of daytime TV. When Oprah speaks, people listen. Even if only a fraction of Oprah’s fans are motivated to try a vegan diet—for three weeks, three months or forever—it will make a world of difference for animals, for people and for the planet. www.PETA.org

Canada Day: 91+ Reasons to Not Celebrate - A Complement to Dominion Institute’s 101 Things
PEJ News - Joan Russow, Global Compliance Research Project - No amount of gun salutes, military fly-overs, fire works, with song, music and dance, and flag waving can eclipse what has been really happening in Canada. No amount of nice sounding rhetoric such as in the minority government’s 2007 Speech from the Throne, comparing “Canada to the guiding light of the North Star”, can prevent Canada from now being perceived as an international pariah of corporatism and militarism. No painting of the Maple Leaf on the C-17 planes of Canada One, will prevent Canada from being ready to go anywhere, any place and at any time at the behest of the US policy of preventive/pre-emptive aggression. Perhaps even Iran!!!! www.PEJ.org

Slaughterhouse Workers: Dying For A Job
PETA - Lindsay Rajt - The “head table” at the Quality Pork Processors slaughterhouse in Austin, Minnesota, is not a place of honor. Until recently, it was where workers cut up pigs’ heads and shot compressed air into their skulls, causing their brains to come tumbling out. At least 18 employees who worked the head table have developed a mysterious neurological illness as a result, with symptoms ranging from weakness and fatigue to acute paralysis. www.PETA.org

Bill C-7 and Why the Public Should be Aware PEJ News - Kirsten Stevens - After my husband drowned following a survivable floatplane accident in the spring of 2005, leaving me alone to care for our newborn baby and two young children, I needed answers in order to find peace and move on. More than three years later, there are still no answers. Although he and the four other men on board that day were working, there has been no accident report and no occupational health and safety investigation. (Please see this link for an explanation: http://www3.telus.net/public/t9232724/home_files/Investigation%20of%20Workplace%20Deaths.htm) There have been no recommendations aimed at preventing similarly caused accidents and fatalities. There has been no report from the coroner. There has been no closure. (See: http://www.questforjustice.ca for more information) www.PEJ.org

Alternatives to Free Trade: Fair Trade and Beyond
Socialist Appeal - The global debate around free-trade and its consequences has evolved tremendously in recent years, from tiny circles of leftist critics into a broad international protest movement. Although the movement began to bloom in response to the policies of the World Trade Organization (WTO), the biggest demonstrations have been in response to the now-popular "bi-lateral" free-trade agreements that economically powerful countries sign with poorer nations. Once one has become conscious of the problems created by free-trade agreements, whether they are international or regional, an immediate task presents itself: finding a feasible alternative. www.socialistappeal.org

If We Are What We Buy, We Should Buy Cruelty-Free
PETA - Ann Marie Dori - In his new book Snoop: What Your Stuff Says About You, psychologist Sam Gosling reveals how poking around other people’s possessions can offer insights into their personalities. The University of Texas professor sent teams of grad students into strangers’ dorm rooms and offices to analyze their bookshelves, posters, shoes, stuffed animals, CDs and other belongings. All of this stuff, he claims, can tell snoopers whether you are inviting or anxious, cheerful or cranky. Big deal. I can suss out the “real you” just by asking what brands of dish soap and toothpaste you buy. www.PETA.org

Fortress North America: Is the future of Paranoia, the internal mind-scan identity scheme - the Diatitrenous
PEJ News- Joan Russow-Global Compliance Research Project - It is not enough to check just one fingerprint, we need to registrar all ten fingerprints (Chertoff); It is not enough to set up no-fly lists, no-drive lists, no-walk lists, no-crawl lists, no swim-over-river-by-border lists, or no-scale wall lists; It is not enough to probe eyes with iris/retinal identification [it is not true that the eyes are the window to the mind], it is not enough to confiscate anti-administration, material or permit presidential wire taping: it is not enough to engage in racial profiling, it is not even enough to “virtually strip” passengers through scanning the naked body beneath the wardrobe (a 3-D holographic image of the body," L3 Communications)* Now it is the mind that needs to be penetrated: what devious schemes are being envisioned. The future could be an internal mind scan (diatitrenous) to once and for all protect Fortress North America. *see http://www.cbc.ca/canada/british-columbia/story/2008/06/20/bc-virtually-naked-airport-scanner.htmlwww.PEJ.org

John McCain, Mr Military and Security, Goes to Ottawa, June 20, 2008
PEJ News - Joan Russow - Global Compliance Research Project - On June 20, John McCain speaks to the Economic Club of Canada in Ottawa. McCain is scheduled to speak on NAFTA, and will probably not disappoint the Canadian Association of Defence & Security Industries CADSI, a not-for-profit business association representing Canadian defence & security industries with 500 member companies, which want to be assured of sustaining and future lucrative military and security contracts. McCain perpetuates the Reagan notion of the “US as the last hope of Man on Earth”, McCain calls for increased US militarism and claims that he has continually lobbied for increased troops in Iraq.
