Please don't send me the insert name of publication here any more. They're logging in the Walbran (see http://www.victoria.indymedia.org/news/2005/06/41482.php) and I don't want it showing up in the mailbox.
I purchase 100% post consumer recycled paper (http://rfu.org), and I suggest that you quickly move in that direction before our ancient forests disappear forever. It will lend you much more legitimacy, too.

PORT ALBERNI, BRITISH COLUMBIA ? In another major court victory for First Nations, the Huu-ay-aht First Nation (HFN) have received a decision from the Supreme Court of British Columbia which holds that the BC Ministry of Forests program designed to address aboriginal interests on forestry matters fails to meet the Province?s constitutional duty to First Nations.

My friend and comrade Macdonald Stainsby is on a months-long, cross-Canada
tour of our settler society's Indigenous communities, with the aim of
informing the rest of us of their struggles against colonialism. As he
has no source of funding, he is doing this all on a shoe-string budget,
hitchhiking and staying with friends and strangers who have opened their
homes and communities to him.

Was forwarded one of your mailings by Laura Fluter. It occurred that some people on your list might be interested in the new e-resources on human security we have put together at the Human Security Centre at the Liu Institute at UBC.
Modeled on the annual Human Development Report, the Human Security Report maps the incidence, intensity, causes and consequences of global violence and policy responses to that violence. Each year, the Human Security Report also focuses on a specific thematic issue - the (two-volume) 2005 Report, for example, examines trends in global violence, while the 2006 Report analyses the war/disease nexus, highlighting the too-often ignored indirect costs of war. The first issue of the Report is due out in July 2005.
The Gateway is a rapidly expanding searchable online database of human security-related resources including reports, journal articles, news items and fact sheets. The Gateway was developed in collaboration with the Canadian Consortium on Human Security.
Human Security Research is a monthly online compilation of significant new human security-related research published by university research institutes, think-tanks, governments, IGOs and NGOs.
Human Security News in an online daily round up of the latest human security-related news stories from around the world. It is published on week-day mornings.
All of these e-resources are available free of charge.

The largest animal testing centre of Europe is located in the Netherlands. The Biomedical Primate Research Center (BPRC) keeps 1600 monkeys in their labs. They are locked up and have to undergo terrible things, in the name of 'science'. The BPRC is performing tests in the area of infection-illnesses (such as AIDS, hepatitis and malaria), xenotransplantation, radiation, tear gas (for self defence), chronic diseases and neurological abnormities.
A comparable primate (breeding) centre in the UK, Shamrock Farm, had to close down after many demonstrations and direct actions. BPRC is going to be the next primate centre to close down!

I am a member of Amnesty International Canada. I also respond to as many Amnesty USA campaigns as I can. That is why I am sending this to you. We are in danger of losing the human rights our elders fought for in two world wars. We are not willing enough to speak out about what is going wrong and what is unacceptable in our country and around the world. We only need look to Maher Arar's terrible case to see a citizen betrayed and the danger that awaits us all if we remain silent. Please sign the attached petition and pass it on to as many people as you can everywhere in the world. We need to send a message and it needs to be clear and unequivocal.

Please review and sign the petition above as soon as possible. It concerns the University of Western Ontario's proposal to honour Dr. Henry Morgentaler (longtime women's reproductive rights activist) in 2 weeks and the fierce opposition to the award by religious anti-choice groups. As the opposition (mostly in the U.S for some reason!) has now amassed over 10,000 signatures on their own petition, speed is of the essence for this one. If you could forward this petition to as many people and groups as possible, we will increase our chances of fending off the attack from the anti-choice opposition and allow Dr. Morgentaler to receive the tribute.

Scientists have begun putting genes from human beings into food crops in a dramatic
extension of genetic modification. The move, which is causing disgust and revulsion
among critics, is bound to strengthen accusations that GM technology is creating
"Frankenstein foods" and drive the controversy surrounding it to new heights. But
supporters say that the controversial new departure presents no ethical problems and
could bring environmental benefits.

A little over three years ago, the Sunday Edition went to Washington, DC to explore the politics of president George W. Bush. Michael sat with Pastor Jim Wallis in his living room in Washington's inner city to watch President Bush's State of the Union address. Jim Wallis is an evangelican leader. He founded a Christian group called Sojourners which advocates peace and social justice.

As indigenous people of this only unceded province of Canada, we do not get any sort of help from the province or from our own chief and councillors. As indigenous people of British Columbia, we are left out of everything. We are left behind. As other indigenous people from other parts of Canada move into B.C. they get all the jobs and education and help. But as Indigenous people of B.C. we get nothing. Yet this sacred lands is OUR sacred lands. Many of the resources of this province come from OUR sacred lands.
The sell out treaty chiefs only speak for themselves, and they do not represent us on any level of government. As the Bear Clan of Maxan Lake, we want our sacred lands of Maxan Lake and traplines back into our own hands. So we can begin to live out our lives on our lands. We want to take care of our own education, housing, health and medicines. After fifty years under the three levels of governments, we still get nothing. We are denied every thing we are entitled to.
It is high time we take care of our own destinations. We want our voices to be heard now. The present treaty process of this unceded province, should be boycotted, until we can get our sacred lands of Maxan Lake and traplines back into our own hands. My voice to Grand Chief Edward John has gone unheard of for the past fifteen years or so. So will Premier Gordon Cambell, stand up and listen to my voice and give us back our sacred lands. We do not want any treatys on our sacred lands. AS they have not ask us for our consent, to steal our sacred lands. They are only the modern day Treaty Thieves, many of them do not belong to the lands they claim as theirs. Please Premier Gordon Cambell, and Prime Minister Paul Martin, please give us back our sacred lands. This is your jobs to take care of us as indigenous people of this only unceded province of Canada.

On May 25, CBC national radio aired a clip on Tooker and the dangers of anti-depressant drugs. You can listen to the clip here:
http://www.cbc.ca/informationmorningns/interviews.html
Click on the line under "Concerns about anti-depressants"
It doesn't include the host intro, which was:
Depression is one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in the western world. And in the last decade many new drugs have emerged to treat it. But there are concerns about those drugs, and some patients and doctors are unsure whether their benefits outweigh the risks.
The Canadian Psychiatric Association says anti-depressants are still the best option for patients. But the widow of a well-known Canadian activist is questioning the role of one of those drugs in her husband's death. Tooker Gomberg was a former Edmonton City Councillor and mayoralty candidate, a peace protester and voice for the environment. CBC health reporter, Pauline Dakin has more.
