VANOC (Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic) Evicted from Office in Victoria
- PEJnews -Joan Russow, Global Compliance Research Project
On February 6, 2010, citizens of Victoria, British Columbia, gathered in front of the VANOC office. A video on youtube documenting this momentous occasion is enclosed
www.PEJ.org.
Citizens were crying “shame” because public funds spent on the Olympics had displaced public funds desperately needed for the guaranteeing of fundamental rights: the right to affordable housing, the right to safe unadulterated and locally grown food, the right to universally accessible not for profit non two-tier health care system, the right to safe drinking water, and publicly-controlled sewage treatment, the right to affordable education, the right to a safe environment ...... and the right to assemble, the right to protest, and the right to speak out.
The eviction notice was solemnly read and duct-taped, carefully, to imposing wrought-iron gate of the VANOC Victoria Office. Sheepishly, a VANOC spokesperson, carrying a box of Olympic trinkets and souvenirs, from CGPW - the Public Relations firm of VANOC, emerged from the VANOC building.
On behalf of VANOC he accepted the eviction notice, and profusely apologized
to the citizens not only of Victoria but also of British Columbia.
A video on youtube had documented this momentous occasion.
