Americans and Afghans alike are rightly outraged over a video circulating on the Internet that allegedly shows U.S. Marines urinating on Taliban corpses. Pentagon officials are scrambling to do damage control, fearing that the video will hinder peace talks, and military officials are promising that those involved will be punished to the highest extent. But another video that surfaced recently also merits outrage and action: It shows a soldier viciously beating a sheep with a baseball bat while other soldiers laugh and cheer.

CFI Mourns the Death of Christopher Hitchens

Center for Inquiry ·CFI Mourns the Death of Christopher HitchensChristopher Hitchens died Thursday of complications from esophageal cancer. He was 62. “Christopher Hitchens was a gifted writer and polemicist, with razor-sharp wit and an acute intellect, who was also a steadfast champion for secularism,” said Ronald A. Lindsay, president and CEO of the Center for Inquiry (CFI). “We are deeply saddened by his death.” Hitchens was prolific, writing on a number of topics through his varied career as an author and journalist. His works covered topics as diverse as the Elgin marbles, Mother Teresa, and the equivocations of Bill Clinton. Fortunately for those concerned about the influence of religion, Hitchens also turned his wide-ranging intellect to religion. His 2007 book, God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything, became a best seller, and Hitchens became a well-known debater on the topic of religion. In the last several years, he was a fixture as a speaker for many secular organizations, including CFI and the Council for Secular Humanism. Hitchens was a long-time columnist for Free Inquiry. Hitchens left us many words of wisdom. But perhaps one quote stands out. In God Is Not Great, Hitchens wrote, “Human decency is not derived from religion. It precedes it.” In this concise, insightful observation, Hitchens captures all that needs to be said about the independence of morality from religion. Hitchens has left humanists and atheists a rich legacy of logic, fearless advocacy, and wit. It’s up to us to make good use of it. |

Now that Greece is in the rearview mirror the focus is moving to the next potential catastrophe which is the US debt ceiling. As time goes on it looks like the Republicans are being squeezed into a corner where causing a default will most certainly be blamed on them.

Conservatives lose in Court over in-and -out scheme
-Joan Russow
The ruling of the court confirms my long standing concern about this fraudulent in-an-out scheme. And about the the error of the Governor general in dissolving parliament and allowing an election when this issue was being investigated by the Parliamentary Committee on Access to Information, privacy, and Ethics. I think that all 67 official Agents should also be charged, and that the Conservatives members, who are still in government, and who were involved in the in-and out scheme should be named and be obliged to stand in Parliament.( in the event that they are not charged)

Opinion:
Carole James should step aside before she ruins the NDP. There is nothing more healthy for a Party than an all out rock and roll leadership convention. It is one of the best ways for a party to get out the message, stimulate interest and launch a revived political movement. Perhaps the problem is that Carol James is afraid she would lose?

Officials responding to a complaint about a putrid smell at Florida's Ebro Greyhound Park recently found the bodies of 37 dead and decomposing dogs who had apparently starved to death—as well as five more dogs who were near death. Some of the dogs had duct tape wrapped around their necks. It appears that the owner had intentionally left the greyhounds to die when the racing season ended.

Handicapping the Global Midterms Winners and Losers

Handicapping the Global Midterms Winners and Losers By Tom Engelhardt http://www.tomdispatch.com/archive/175312/ You can’t turn on the TV news or pick up a paper these days without stumbling across the latest political poll and the pros explaining how to parse it, or some set of commentators, pundits, and reporters placing their bets on the midterm elections. The media, of course, loves a political horse race and, as those 2010 midterms grow ever closer, you can easily feel like you’re not catching the news but visiting an Off-Track Betting parlor. Fortified by rounds of new polls and all those talking heads calibrating and recalibrating prospective winners and losers, seats “leaning Democratic” and “leaning Republican,” the election season has essentially become an endless handicapping session. This is how American politics is now framed -- as a months or years-long serial election for which November 2nd is a kind of hangover. Then, only weeks after the results are in, the next set of polls will be out and election 2012, the Big Show, will be on the agenda with all the regular handicappers starting to gather at all the usual places.

Karl Rove has caused a storm of protest by saying that he is proud of waterboarding and other “enhanced interrogation techniques” used on prisoners by the US and internationally condemned as torture. According to Rove torture is good and it seems international law and human rights don't matter. This was the man who was the Bush administration's public relations advisor and often called "Bushes Brain"

No Island Light Rail?
The Times Colonist reports today that developer Ken Mariash is selling off he Bayview Project. This is the old rail yard for our dilapidated E&N Island Rail system. It is the ideal location for a light rail station complex. Once it gets developed with high rises though, the concept of an island light rail will become distant wishful thinking. Now is the time to trade that dumb bridge idea that will equal more car traffic, for a nice new rapid rail system.
