Profit and PR are the real enemies of innovation

From drugs to computers, the big rewards are now in tweaking existing products and presenting them as ground-breaking

For more than a decade, we have been told that the pharmaceutical industry faces a crisis: it finds it more and more difficult to develop new drugs. The returns on research and development, company executives plead, are dismal. In the US particularly they have therefore lobbied for longer periods of patent protection, more government subsidies and less regulation of new drugs.

Mexican Victims of Violence Take Aim Against U.S. Firearms

Reprint| |Monday, August 13, 2012

MEXICO CITY, Aug 11 2012 (IPS) - “The United States should stop producing so many weapons, which cause us so much harm. That country also suffers from so much violence, as billions of dollars go into manufacturing guns.”

That is the message that anti-crime activist Fernando Ocegueda will take to the public in the United States, during a one-month visit to that country by the Caravan for Peace with Justice and Dignity, made up of 70 family members of victims of violence in Mexico.

Re-making Financial Policy to Meet Society’s Needs

Visit the South Centre’s website: www.southcentre.org

The financial sector has been hit by major crises and scandals, to the point that its credibility with the public has fallen to historically low levels. A re-thinking and re-making of financial policies and the role of financial institutions is thus urgently needed. This was the theme of a lecture presented by the distinguished former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Yaga Venugopal Reddy, which was made in conjuncture with the 2012 Annual General Meeting of the Bank for International Settlements held in Basel, Switzerland. The 2012 Per Jacobsson Foundation Lecture by Mr Reddy, made on 24 June 2012, covered three main themes: (1) Society and Finance, (2) Economic Policies and the Financial Sector, and (3) Regulation of the Financial Sector.

Below is the first part of the lecture, on Society and Finance. Future issues of SouthViews will publish the other two parts of the lecture.
By Yaga Venugopal Reddy

Cuban foreign Minister respnds to  US' keeping Cuba on its terror black list
Posted: 01 August 2012

Yet again, the only reason Cuba is kept on this list is exposed as an attempt to justify the U.S. blockade of our country, as well as the adoption of new measures to limit our financial and commercial transactions, to strangle the Cuban economy and impose a regime which responds to U.S. interests.

The LIBOR Scandal: Why Is It Scandalous?

Immanuel Wallerstein - Since July 4, we have been reading in major world newspapers and in statements by legislators, central banks, and judicial authorities, that there is a "scandal" about something called LIBOR. Before that time, few persons outside the group concerned with banking had even heard of LIBOR. Suddenly, we were being told that major banks in Great Britain, the United States, Switzerland, Germany, France, and probably a number of other countries had engaged in actions that were allegedly "fraudulent."

The growing mobilization against Harper: Not your ordinary revolution

LANA PAYNE
| JULY 30, 2012 - Scientists. Doctors. Nuclear engineers. Academics. Researchers. Stephen Harper has a big problem. He has ticked them all off. And they are not suffering their grievances or concerns for informed, fact-based public policy and decision-making, the environment, the health of Canada's most vulnerable citizens and the safety of all of us in silence. No. Instead they are protesting, marching, disrupting government news conferences. They are mobilizing.
