Animal tests: A choice we can’t live with

Jessica Sandler and Kate Willett, Ph.D. - Who would you save—your child or your dog? This is the phony choice lobbed at those of us who advocate for the replacement of animal tests with non-animal testing methods. Fortunately, you don't have to choose.

The Brothel Project Review

In a city known for high tea, seniors, gardens, and perhaps most epitomized by the expression – the newly wed and the nearly dead, there is another lesser known, but equally thriving element to the coastal city of Victoria – the sex trade. In a debut film by director April Butler-Parry and written by Gillian Hrankowski, The Brothel Project explores Victoria’s best-kept secret via a new 52-minute documentary.

Is Contempt of Parliament and Parliamentary Committees “sufficient cause” for suspending, removing or jailing Harper and impugned ministers?

- PEJnews
Joan Russow, Ph.D., Global Compliance Research Project

On February 3, 2010, the Opposition parties, after a meeting with constitutional lawyers, held a press conference. The press conference was in relation to the Harper government¹s refusal to release ``unredacted`` documents on the detention of Afghan prisoners. The Opposition parties are referring to Harper's and his government¹s refusal to release unredacted documents, as a demonstration of contempt of Parliament. When does it apply and what are the implications of an allegation of contempt of Parliament or of Parliamentary Committees?

China's Slave Wages For U.S. Workers

Shamus Cooke -
Optimism dominated Obama’s State of the Union address. He confidently stated that the financial system had stabilized, and economic growth  had begun. It was the same “we’ve turned the corner” cheerleading that  began on day two of the recession; and the same corner has been  proclaimed as “turned” and returned dozens of times since by the media,  politicians, and Wall Street CEOs.

PEJnews - Joan Russow -Global Compliance Research Project

On CBC National, (February 3, 2010) Harper was described as the most pro-Israel Canadian Prime Minister. An issue that was not raised was the relationship between evangelical Christian Fundamentalists’ beliefs in “dispensationalism/left behind/rapture/ Armageddon and their support for Israel”

Dolphins in tanks: Cruel confinement

Jennifer O'Connor - Scientists at Emory University recently determined that the cognitive capacity of dolphins is second only to that of humans and that the brain cortex of dolphins has the same complicated folds associated with human intelligence. A prominent ethicist believes that dolphins should be given the same moral standing as humans. We know that dolphins have distinct personalities, can recognize themselves in mirrors and can think about the future.

Joan Russow – The Globe and Mail quotes Harper as stating "Going forward, I believe the smaller, but still influential, G8 will focus on security concerns and human welfare. " (January 27, 2010)

“Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, will deliver a special address at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. Canada is G8 President this year, and Prime Minister Harper will set out his country's agenda for its presidency, which will focus on security concerns and improving human welfare.” (World Economic Forum, 2010)
